Facilitating a Vision, The Journey to a Successful IUJ/UNDP Partnership: Unlocking Africa’s Potential – The Africa-Japan Partnership.

Background to the Event

Introduction

Over the past year, I have had the privilege of working closely with the International University of Japan (IUJ) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to facilitate a partnership that culminated in the recently held event, “Unlocking Africa’s Potential: The Africa-Japan Partnership.” This journey has been one of dedication, collaboration, and shared vision, leading to an event that successfully brought together global leaders, experts, and innovators to discuss Africa’s future and the crucial role of international partnerships. I reached out to UNDP and met with their team to explore various areas of collaboration, travelled to Kobe Institute of Computing to attend the JICA-UNDP-KIC event in August 2023 and constantly in touch to ensure our project come to fruition.

The Genesis of the IUJ-UNDP Partnership

The idea of forging a partnership between IUJ and UNDP began a little over a year ago. Recognizing the synergies between IUJ’s commitment to fostering global leaders and UNDP’s mission to drive sustainable development, I saw an opportunity to create a platform where these two institutions could collaborate on issues of global importance. The road was not always easy, but with a clear vision and the support of a dedicated team, we worked tirelessly to bring this partnership to fruition.

Strategizing Against All Odds: Overcoming Organizational Challenges

Organizing the event came with its own set of challenges, particularly as it coincided with a period when many IUJ students were on break. This required us to think creatively and collaborate beyond the immediate IUJ community to ensure a successful turnout physically at the venue.

Understanding the importance of wider participation, we also structured an extensive online publicity campaign. This allowed us to reach a global audience, resulting in over 170 virtual participants joining us from various parts of the world. The hybrid format not only expanded our reach but also ensured that the discussions resonated with a diverse and international audience.

As the event drew to a close, I had the honor of delivering the closing remarks and vote of thanks. In my closing remarks, I emphasized the importance of turning the discussions from today into actionable steps and urged all participants to keep the dialogue alive beyond this event. The conversations we’ve had today should serve as a foundation for continued engagement between Africa and Japan, reinforcing the significance of our collaborative efforts in unlocking Africa’s potential.

Thank you very much. It is with profound gratitude that I stand before you today to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who played a role in making this event a remarkable success. To our distinguished guests, Ms. Ahunna Eziakonwa, UNDP Assistant Administrator and Regional Director for Africa, and Mr. Nakamura Toshiyuki, Special Advisor to the President of JICA, your presence here today is truly an honor. Your insightful contributions have added immense value to our discussions, and we are deeply grateful for your time and commitment.

I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the organizing team of this event. The journey to today has been a long one, filled with planning, replanning, and countless hours of hard work. Bringing an event of this magnitude to life is no small feat, and your dedication is evident in the smooth execution we have witnessed today. It is through your tireless efforts that we have been able to create a platform for such meaningful dialogue, and for that, I say thank you.

The African community at IUJ is a shining example of what can be achieved when diverse minds come together with a shared vision. We are more than just a student body; we are a model of co-creation, a beacon of what can be accomplished when collaboration and mutual respect are at the forefront. Other universities could greatly benefit from following our example, as we have shown that when we pool our resources, talents, and ideas, the results are nothing short of extraordinary. I urge everyone here to connect with the African community members and leadership at IUJ. They hold within them a wealth of knowledge, ideas, and a collaborative spirit that is essential for driving innovation and fostering sustainable development.

Ms. Eziakonwa, your call to reframe the narrative on Africa has deeply resonated with us all. The narrative surrounding Africa is often one of challenges, but we know that it is also a story of resilience, creativity, and a tireless drive to forge a better future. Your words have reminded us of the power we hold in reshaping the world’s perception of Africa, not as a continent in need, but as a continent full of potential and promise. As we move forward, I am confident that the UNDP can play a pivotal role in harnessing the innovative ideas and collaborative spirit of the African students here at IUJ. With one of the largest contingents of African students in Japan, IUJ is uniquely positioned to serve as a bridge for meaningful partnerships and growth opportunities. The potential for collaboration is immense, and I am excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.

On behalf of the entire African community at IUJ, I want to express my deep gratitude to each and every one of you for your participation today. Your presence has not only made this event successful but has also reinforced the importance of the Africa-Japan partnership that we are all committed to strengthening. This event will surely remain a memorable one, and I hope the conversations we have started today will continue to grow and bear fruit long after we leave this room.

As we now transition into the networking session, I invite all of you to join us for group photos and to continue the rich discussions we’ve had throughout the day. Let us take this opportunity to forge new connections, explore new ideas, and pave the way for future collaborations. Once again, thank you all for being here, and I wish you a wonderful and productive day ahead.
